Fenghuang Paper-cut Arts

Culture 2012/11/24 View:2689

Fenghuang paper-cuts are generally made by handwork instead of machine production. There are mainly two kinds: cutting by scissors and cutting by nicking tools.

Based on different implied meanings, Fenghuang paper-cuts are divided to 7 kinds: blessing, counteract evil force, obliterating evil, encouraging, guarding and for fun. According to vary patterns, Fenghuang paper-cuts can also be divided to character, birds and beasts, words, materials, flowers and trees, mountains and water, insects and vegetables and so on.

Since the commonly-seen tool materials and easily-grasped skills, Fenghuang paper-cuts share specialty which can not be replaced by other kind of arts. That is also the reason why Fenghuang paper-cuts have been adored by people from ancient times to the present.

Fenghuang paper-cuts art has much to do with Miao people’s life style and customs. Ranging from wedding, funeral to birthday feast, you can find the reflection in Fenghuang paper-cuts.

At present, Fenghuang paper-cuts are more used as decorations. Paper-cuts can decorate walls, windows, mirrors, lights and lanterns, etc. Besides, they can be used to embellish gifts and can also be sent to others as presents.
